Since the legalisation of cannabidiol (CBD) based novel food products in Ireland, consumers have become increasingly curious about the many benefits that they can offer. Hemp oil and CBD oil are two products in particular that have proven popular amongst consumers in Ireland. While both provide similar benefits to consumers, there are a number of differences between the two types of products.
What are Hemp Oils and CBD Oils?
Firstly, it is essential to note that CBD oil and hemp (or hempseed) oil are different products. However, with both oils deriving from the same cannabis family, they can often be marketed incorrectly, leaving consumers confused about what they are purchasing.
What is Hemp Oil?
Hemp oil, or hemp seed oil, derives from the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant. Users of hemp oils will not get ‘high’ from hemp oils as they contain no THC (the psychoactive compound in cannabis) and little to no CBD. Hemp oils may have many possible health benefits as they contain:
- omega-3 fats
- omega-6 fats
- all 9 essential amino acids
Possible health benefits of using hemp oils include:
- antioxidant effects
- anti-ageing effects
- constipation relief
- numerous nutritional benefits
What is CBD Oil?
While hemp oil derives from the seeds of the cannabis Sativa plant, CBD oil comes from the flowers, leaves, and stems. As with hemp oils, users of CBD oils will not experience a ‘high’ from CBD products as they contain only trace elements of THC. CBD oils may have a number of health benefits including:
- pain relief
- reduced anxiety
- anti-inflammatory properties when used as a topical ointment
- improved sleep
Hemp Oil vs CBD Oil
As mentioned above, while both hemp oil and CBD oil are similar product types, there are many differences between the two – most notably the different health and nutritional benefits that can result from their use. While hemp oils may provide many possible nutritional benefits to users thanks to their make-up of fatty acids, amino acids and antioxidants; CBD oils may have more possible therapeutic benefits, such as pain and insomnia relief.
